The Right Ways To Avoid College Burnout

You are a super human. You’re making time to earn your degree without stopping your career or your family commitments. 

But taking all this on can be tough. 

Earning your degree should enhance your life. If your schedule has left you feeling overwhelmed or stressed for weeks, then you are on the quick path to college burnout. 

College burnout is the physical or mental collapse caused by overwork or stress. If studying for your college courses leaves you drained, something needs to change. 

Know the signs. You’ve hit college burnout if you’re experiencing these symptoms:

  • Emotional or intellectual exhaustion
  • Lack of motivation or an unwillingness to study further
  • Frustration
  • Slipping academic performance
  • Feeling apathetic towards educational subjects and discussions 

Your story on earning your degree deserves a happy ending. Shift your strategy with these scheduling tips so that you avoid college burnout. 


What crunch time? Staying on top of assignments and exam prep is a sure way to avoid college burnout. Use smartphone calendar apps for reminders on assignment due dates and use planners to sketch out your schedule. Break down big assignments into smaller, more achievable tasks that fit more easily into your schedule. Talk to your academic advisor for more time-management suggestions. 

Set Reasonable Goals

Learn when to say yes—and when to say no. Being realistic on what you can do this semester will help you avoid college burnout. What classes can you take on with confidence this semester? What tasks can you do well this week? 

Know your priorities. Make a list on what you want to achieve in your education, career and community this semester. What are your true values? Then reassess your weekly schedule. Does this task or event help you reach your goals this semester? 

Mind Your Health

This tends to be the first thing that gets tossed out the window when assignments are looming. But avoiding college burnout means taking care of you. Burn off steam with exercise that you enjoy. Fuel your mind with a diet full of nutrients to increase your physical, mental and emotional stamina. Don’t cut corners on your eight hours of sleep. Keep your body as strong as your mind this semester. 


How can you relax when there’s so much to get done? Stepping away from an assignment—even for an hour—can be the difference between renewed energy and college burnout. Return to a hobby or activity that makes you happy so that you de-stress and feel refreshed when it’s time to hit the books.
